Raging Bull is the older brother in a amazing family of hyper coasters built by Bolliger and Mabillard (B&M). The B&M hyper coaster model has been a fan favorite for years. From their terrifying heights, to their floating in space simulations, these coasters deliver everything a thrill seeker desires. Raging Bull is no different. Even though Raging Bull is considered to be the bottom dweller of B&M hypers, this rollercoaster still stands as one of the best coasters in the Chicago area. One special thing about Raging Bull is that it’s vastly different from its siblings. This roller coaster focuses more on high speed twist and turns than huge floater airtime hills. Critics bash Raging Bull for it’s lack of airtime, but I think this bull still rides strong.
Raging Bull was my very first hyper coaster experience. I remember how intimidating that slow climb up the 202-foot tall lift hill was. As we got closer to the top the view was stunning but was hardly noticed in my mind. I was focused on the looming drop ahead of me. Finally, we crested the pre drop. Even though I knew that element was there, I was still taken by surprise. The momentum from the mini hill bucked me out of my seat for the giant drop. Immediately, my adrenaline ignited and my hands and fear flew into the air. After hitting the brake run, I had no doubt what my new number 1 coaster was. From that day forward, I was in love with B&M Hypers.
Element by Element:
The Lift Hill: Slow long lift hill which for first time riders will enhance the anticipation. However, after several rides you just wish it could get to the top already.
First Drop: The first drop is really the crown jewel of this coaster. The pre drop gives you a nice push right before you take the 205-foot plunge. This momentum gives a great slingshot effect for back row riders. The drop sends you through a tunnel which is a nice prop.
Turn Around: The uphill banked turn really doesn’t do much. This is a moment to catch your breath after the intense first drop.
First Airtime Hill: The first airtime hill gives some disappointing floater air because of the heavy trim brakes on it. I haven’t been blessed enough to ride this bull with the trims off.
Hill to Banked Turn Drop: You climb a second hill that send you down a drop which banks left. Not much with this element except for the nice speed it provides.
Turn Around 2: Not sure what to call this element. This is basically another uphill banked helix that really doesn’t do much except maintain the coaster’s speed.
Brake Run to Drop: Next, you bank right into the brake run. The decline that follows is one of the surprising moments on this coaster because you get some nice ejector air.
Camel Hump: Some great floater air is felt on this element.
Twist and turns finale: This coaster finishes off with a barrage of fast turns close to the ground with some mini drops that give you the slightest bit of airtime. I actually really love this ending. It might not be all that intense but the sensation of speed is amazing.
Raging Bull has always been one of my favorite coasters. Recently, I rode Diamondback and I will admit, the floater air is much stronger than Raging Bull’s. However, I think what makes Raging Bull amazing is not its airtime or intensity, but its unique layout, smooth track and first drop. The ride is plain fun which is exactly why I ride coasters in the first place. I definitely recommend this coaster to those taking the trip Six Flags Great America.
Overall: 8.25/10 - Raging Bull lacks in number of airtime moments compared to other hypers, but the fast unique layout of Raging Bull mixed with the smooth steel track makes this coaster exciting and re-ridable.
Excitement/Intensity: 7/10 - A few intense moments and lots of excitement to go around. The height can be nerve racking and the speeds close to the ground will have you holding on.
Fun/Enjoyable: 8/10 - This coaster is very enjoyable to ride not only for the general public but also for die hard coaster lovers.
Layout/Elements: 8/10 - A mixed bag of elements will definitely keep you guessing what is next. This layout is one of kind to Raging Bull which is very refreshing to see from a Six Flags park.
Airtime: 6/10 - There are two amazing airtime moments. Besides those two sections, the coaster really doesn’t deliver much of the signature B&M floater air.
Duration: 9.5/10 - This bull ride well surpasses the 8 seconds required for bull riders to hang on. This coaster provides a very fulfilling experience.
Lateral G’s: 3/10 - Doesn’t buck you side to side as much as it does up and down.
Positive G’s: 6/10 - Several tight turns that pin you to the seat. Nothing extreme.
Smoothness: 9.5/10 - Very smooth B&M steel track.
Train/Comfort: 10/10 - B&M hypers have the best restraints, so much freedom it feels like there is nothing there.
Theming/Appearance: 6/10 - This coaster is very beautiful and visible. It is the coolest thing driving up I-94 and spotting the first drop above the trees as you approach Gurnee, IL. Now the theming doesn't have much to it. Though I will say that it is perfectly placed into a well themed Southwest section of Six Flags Great America which earns it a few points there.
