Magnum XL-200 debuted at Cedar Point in 1989 as the world's first "hyper coaster." It stands at 205 Feet tall and reaches speeds of 72 MPH as it conquers 5000 plus feet of track. Magnum XL-200 draws mixed opinions from across the coaster enthusiasts. Some find the ride painful and rough and others like myself see Magnum as this glorious ejector airtime producer that satisfies our crazy desires.
The ride starts off with a big 194-foot drop into a large airtime hill which gives you an awesome view of Lake Erie and Cedar Point Shores. You then you curve left and dive straight through a tunnel. Exiting this tunnel you get thrusted into a floater air element and then smacked over to the your left side for a drawn out 540 degree turn around. What follows next is heaven on earth. Airtime hill after airtime hill, your body launches into the lap bar leaving your sanity at the mercy of the coaster.
These hills have a triangle like shape to them which is much different than the gradual change in angle of decent of most modern coasters. The last severe airtime is done in another tunnel which stunned me on my first lap. Finally, you hit the brake run bruised thighs and all as you coast back towards the station.
Magnum XL-200 was a fantastic roller coaster! I can see why people don't like it as it is not the most comfortable ride in the park. But sometimes you have to endure the pain to experience the glory. The airtime is amazing and unique which is all I needed to convince me to get back in line.
